Empowerment Through Thembelihle School: Arts Department

  • Foundation Phase: An extra hour per week is now dedicated to music, focusing heavily on aural perception (ear training) to build a strong musical foundation before introducing formal written theory.

  • Intermediate and Senior Phase (Grades 4–7): Learners are advancing rapidly in music theory and practical musicianship. They are progressing from learning the C Major scale and basic intervals to identifying major and minor chords by ear.

  • Art Club Achievements: The club successfully hosted visiting music specialists from Tanzania and delivered a highly praised performance for a sponsor, Ardmore Ceramics. Learners are becoming increasingly independent, often learning songs by ear and teaching one another.

  • High School Expansion: We have introduced a new afternoon Arts Programme for high school learners, providing a much-needed structured pathway for them to continue developing their musical and performance skills after graduating from Grade 7.

Learner Spotlight:
Ndalwenhle Sokhela, a highly dedicated Grade 4 student, has mastered 90% of the Art Club's repertoire in just two terms. Ndalwenhle shows an exceptional passion and natural talent for playing the bass marimba.

Care Centre: Arts Impact

Our partnership with Angels' Care
Centre continues to yield beautiful results, as detailed in our recent Mid-Year

8–9 Years Age Group

  • Visual Art: Learners showed remarkable growth from Term 1, transitioning from needing assistance with basic fine motor skills to working independently. Key activities included making paper roses to improve scissor control, collaborating on a large decorative tree, and moulding 3D art from clay and playdough.

  • Performing Art: Students progressed from learning basic ballet fundamentals to confidently performing three complete dance routines. Participation in drumming and marimba ensemble has significantly strengthened their sense of rhythm, teamwork, and memory.

10–18 Years Age Group

  • Visual Art: Senior learners focused on producing higher-standard work by improving drawing and design skills, emphasizing composition, texture, and craftsmanship. The have also begun an exciting, long-term mixed-media sculpture project of  a Dung Beetle.
